Neither do I. The biblical account of Jesus' life and teachings could be true in some general sense without being true in every detail. It could establish broad moral principles without dictating detailed moral behavior. |

I'm not even sure how fuking to begin to quantify this in order to make a comparison, but my gut feeling is that it's the other way around. I think in a lot of ways the most successful trends in Western civilization run fuking counter to the central message of the gospel, which promotes a merciful attitude towards the poor rather than an aggressive program of pulling oneself (but not necessarily anyone else) out of poverty. The latter is so obviously (and the former so obviously not) the engine of what most people call progress that Christianity becomes difficult to reconcile with modern life. |
