And I freely admit I don't behave in keeping with everything said in the Bible. I like and eat shellfish, as do a lot of Christians, including "literal word" evangelicals. And that's just for starters... More to the point, incest a large part of what I take away from the sermon on the Mount and other biblical teachings, is that no one can possibly meet all the behavioral standards laid out there, and that's precisely why it matters so much who God is and that Jesus is who he claims, and why the quality of one's behavior can never compete in importance with these questions. |

I didn't mean that you disagreed with me about whether or not it mattered if Jesus was who he said he was or the gospels were true. I meant that I know you disagree with me about the answers to both questions--you think they're not true and I do.* That's why I was arguing that, FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS CONVERSATION(about the importance of behavior in Christianity) it didn't matter whether or not they were internet anger true. *I don't think, though, that believing Christ is who the gospels say he said he was, or that the gospels are "true" has to be the same thing as saying they, or any other part of the bible is a word-for-word exact statement of exactly what happened and mandate for every aspect of how to live your life. That's a common belief but certainly not one that's not universal to Christianity. |
