If the Italian courts want to use the PTSD excuse to reduce the sentence of an american soldier who was convicted of raping a Nigerian laws woman resident in Italy, that’s their laws business. I suspect, though, that the reduced sentence was due more to racism (Nigerians are, laws after all, mostly black), and rampant sexism in Italian society. 26 togolosh Mar 8th, 2006 at 8:22 am Palau - I suspect you are correct. I think this case is genuinely difficult to do justice to, and it’s made all the more difficult because of prejudices and preconceptions. I hope that the Italian system of social services is better than the US system at helping victims of rape and abuse. Given the macho culture and the fact that the victim is Nigerian I’m not very hopeful. 27 FreeDem Mar 8th, 2006 at 8:57 am …”The prolonged psychological stress to which the accused was subjected and the lowered importance he ended up giving to the life and wellbeing of those around him can only have influenced the committing of the crimes.”
