I believe blaming the soldiers for the quicksand they are trapped in is stupid. They didn’t send themselves to war. In a “good war” a lot of bad things happen. naked In a “bad naked war” even worse things happen. A “bad naked war”, in my opinion, would be one like Iraq, where an incompetent command structure places soldiers in harm’s way without any clue on how to “win” or any recognition or appreciation for the limits of military force. And then leaves them hanging out there, getting shot at and blown up indefinitely. People under that pressure do bad things. People who are angry, scared, hurt, grieving, betrayed, do bad things. So yeah, bad things are happening in Iraq. But soldiers aren’t allowed to choose which wars they go fight. And at some point when there is an absence of rational, reasonable leadership at the top of the military command, the troops on the ground are likely to engage in worse behavior out of sheer frustration, revenge, desensitization, shellshock, whatever you want to call it.
