Not that they wouldn’t have done it if they hadn’t been soldiers, uncensored but military training, particularly boot camp, does a lot to screw with people’s minds. The first step of basic training is always to break them down for a completely clean slate, but then the next step is doing whatever possible to turn them into some concept of a superwarrior. Most of my friends who have come out of basic training, officer or enlisted, have come out egotistical, self-impressed, overconfident jerks, and it’s only the experience of serving with/under others who have actual experience and accomplishments that gives them a sense of humility and humanity. |
