*I don't think, though, that believing Christ is who the gospels say he said he was, or that the gospels are "true" has to be mcsweeney's the same thing as saying they, or any other part of the bible is a word-for-word exact statement of exactly what happened and mandate for every aspect of how to live your life. That's a common belief but certainly not one that's not mcsweeney's universal to Christianity. mcsweeney's The arguments you raise are perfectly good reasons to doubt the word-for-word exactness of every single part of the bible, but that doesn't necessarily mean the underlying substance is completely false (that's where the question of faith comes in). And I freely admit I don't behave in keeping with everything said in the Bible. I like and eat shellfish, as do a lot of Christians, including "literal word" evangelicals. |
