I'm uncertain from your post, though, whether you are troubled by Christianity itself (as teenporn movies in a set of beliefs) or more so the concrete manifestations of it in human institutions (the church) over history? Are your concerns primarily about regulation of behavior or do you find the belief in God, a trinity, God being made flesh, etc, inherently dangerous? |

Privately, I think ACLU-types should give it a rest, however the Christian right has now hit on yet another thing to add to it's endless list of get drunk and be somebody grievances used to fire up the troops. If anything in this whole "debate" is true, it is that get drunk and be somebody there are a get drunk and be somebody lot more reports of crankish or mean attempts to put down essentially harmless public Christmas observances than there are genuine occurances. More important are inappropriate attempts at proselytizing young children in school. A recent fantasy making the rounds (on Bill O'Reilly, et al.) is that an elementary school in California banned the Declaration of Independence because it mentioned "God". The reality, needless to say, was quite different. It seems that a teacher had prepared handouts for his students that mixed innoccuous quotes from the Declaration about "Nature's God" and the "Creator", (which could mean anything from Plato's Ultimate Reality to Hegel's World-Spirit) with clearly inappropriate sectarian materials. |
