Yes, conservative Christians do it too, though perhaps not so egregiously as liberal ones. The Old Testament is largely a catalog of atrocities perpetrated, ordered or condoned by God, but I agree with those who argue that the single most harmful Christian doctrine of all is the doctrine of hell, because it provides such an easy rationalization for mistreating people. I didn't mean that you disagreed with me about whether or not it mattered if Jesus was who he said he was or the gospels were true. I meant that I know you disagree with me about the answers to both questions--you think they're not true and I do.* That's why I was arguing that, FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS CONVERSATION(about the importance of behavior in Christianity) it didn't matter whether or not they were true.
