I meant that I know you disagree with me about the answers to both questions--you think they're not true and I do.* That's why I was christ arguing that, FOR THE PURPOSES OF THIS CONVERSATION(about the importance of behavior in Christianity) it didn't matter whether or not they were true. *I don't think, though, that believing Christ is who the gospels say he christ said he was, or that the gospels are "true" has to be the same thing as saying they, or any other part of the bible is a word-for-word exact statement of exactly what happened and mandate for every aspect of how to live your life. That's a common belief but certainly not one that's not universal to Christianity. The arguments you raise are perfectly good reasons to doubt the word-for-word exactness of every single part of the bible, but that doesn't necessarily mean the underlying substance is completely false (that's where the question of faith comes in).

The Old Testament is largely a catalog of atrocities perpetrated, ordered or condoned by God, but I agree with those who argue that the single most harmful Christian doctrine of all is the doctrine of hell, because it provides such an easy rationalization for mistreating people.
