But here’s the thing — a (substantial) majority of Argentine voters still think abortion should be illegal, including women who have had abortions. stress I was at a party the other day, talking to a girl about my age (late 20s) who was obviously well-off, well-educated, etc. I asked her what stress girls did when they got pregnant and didn’t want to be. “They have an abortion,” she said, totally nonchalant. “But isn’t it dangerous?” I asked. She said to me, “they stress claim that people die from it, but it’s not true. no one really dies.” What she meant was, that no one like her dies. The people that do die — or that are forced to have children that they cannot afford to raise or feed — are totally under her radar: poor, non-white, in the provinces. And of course she makes no connection between illegal abortion and the huge numbers of homeless children that beg for change in the streets of Buenos Aires. All that making abortion illegal does is increase inequality.
