It could establish broad moral principles without dictating detailed moral behavior. But if you're going to take that position, it weakens your claim that others are misinterpreting or misrepresenting the Bible. And it doesn't change the fact that teachings that liberal Christians are uncomfortable with and tend to ignore or downplay, such as the doctrine of hell, are prominent themes not only in Jesus own statements, but in the Bible more generally. That's a common belief but certainly not one that's not universal to Christianity. The arguments you raise are perfectly good reasons to doubt the word-for-word exactness of every single part of the bible, but that doesn't necessarily mean the underlying substance is completely false (that's where the question of faith comes in).

I'm not even sure how to begin to quantify this in order to make a comparison, but my gut feeling is that it's clips the other way around. I think in a lot of ways the most successful trends in Western civilization run counter to the central message of the gospel, which promotes a merciful attitude towards the poor rather than an aggressive program of pulling oneself clips (but not necessarily anyone else) out of poverty. The latter is so obviously (and the clips former so obviously not) the engine of what most people call progress that Christianity becomes difficult to reconcile with modern life. The message of the gospel to the have nots is pretty clear, but its appeal to the haves may have more to do with history than the actual content.
