We observed the breakdown of the social network, how people don't look out for their neighbors, even as we embraced small responses rather than systematic ones--our church is going to fiction "adopt" a family, isn't that sweet? (And, not to be too cynical, it IS a place to start.) But what interested me most was the connection that the conservatives couldn't make. They observed the breakdown of our communities/social network even as they criticized government solutions and defended Bushco's failures. Underlying this conversation at church was an implicit conversation about the role of government. |

| But what I read was fascinating--the video trolls video out in force to defend GWB and the pathetic federal response to Katrina. I went to a "forum" at my church this morning, and, of course, we discussed Katrina. The people attending are "movers and shakers", well-educated, affluent. What struck me was how confused everyone was in their thinking--it was obvious to me that they haven't been video reading WM. (And forget any inkling of global warming, over-population, international migrations, oil and water depletion and environmental degration.) Similar to the troll comments on this thread, the conservatives were trying to defend GWB & their worldview--who could anticipate the scale of this disaster?!!?! New Orleans was a catastrophe waiting to happen! It didn't have to do with race, but with poverty! We should outsource FEMA! You can't depend on bureaucracies to deliver the goods! |
