Ten or fifteen years ago, I remember ads in the back of Writer’s Digest and other such magazines politely asking authors not to use brand names such as Kleenex and Xerox to mean general categories of products like facial tissues and photocopiers. Needless to say they weren’t very successful, but they did try.
