Anyway, the American Christmas is basically the Dickensian Christmas which, like the Church of England, doesn't have much to do with religion. I can't imagine spending Christmas in the tropics or in the Southern Hemisphere. I have enough trouble travelling from the snowy north to the mother-in-law's in Atlanta. For someone used to fucking-cold Decembers, feels like I'm abandoning Christmas. |

This would have been about 1520. Crankier historians point out that the pre-Christian Germans worshipped trees (St. Boniface routinely chopped down the Tree of Odin to make a chapel while he was converting the Germans, and he was eventually martyred). |
